TikTok Shadowban in 2026: How to Check It, How Long It Lasts, How to Get Out
Videos that used to pull thousands of views suddenly stop at forty. Hashtags bring nothing, your profile does not come up in search, and there is no notification about a violation anywhere in the app. The word that comes to mind is shadowban.
Most articles on the subject either repeat myths or sell "shadowban removal" for twenty dollars. Here is the substance instead: what the word actually refers to, how to tell a real restriction from an ordinary drop in reach, how to check your account in five minutes, and what genuinely brings views back.
Does a TikTok shadowban actually exist
The term "shadowban" appears nowhere in TikTok's documentation. The platform does not use it and support will never confirm it.
The mechanism behind the word, however, is real and openly documented. TikTok's Community Guidelines describe a separate category: content ineligible for the For You feed. Such a video is not removed and the account is not blocked — the clip stays on your profile, works through a direct link, and your followers can see it. It simply never enters recommendations. From the creator's side that is indistinguishable from a shadowban: the video exists, the views do not, and nobody explains why.
The same reduction can apply to an entire profile when violations repeat. The difference matters: a restricted video expires on its own, a restricted account needs action from you.
The signs: how to tell you are restricted
One symptom proves nothing. A restriction shows up as several at once.
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Views dropped tenfold within a day or two | Looks like a restriction — natural decline is gradual |
| In analytics, the "For You" traffic source fell to near zero | The key sign: your clips stopped entering the feed |
| Your video is not found by its own hashtag from another account | The clip is excluded from hashtag results |
| Your profile is not found by your exact username | An account-level restriction |
| Your comments are invisible to other users | A comment restriction — a separate penalty |
| Views dropped but the "For You" share is unchanged | Not a restriction — weak retention |
That last row is the most common outcome by far. More than half of all "I have been shadowbanned" cases turn out to be a drop in watch time: the algorithm showed the clip to a small test group, viewers swiped away in the second second, and the rollout stopped.
How to check a TikTok shadowban: four methods
1. Account Status in settings
The only official source. Open Settings and privacy → Account Status. TikTok lists violations there, shows which clips were found ineligible, and counts the warnings on your profile. A clean section means you have no account-level restriction — the cause is somewhere else.
2. The hashtag test from another account
Put a rare, unique hashtag on a new clip — one nobody else uses. An hour or two later, open TikTok on another device where you are not logged into your profile and search for that hashtag. If the clip is there, your distribution is fine. If it is not, the video is excluded from hashtag results.
3. Username search
From someone else's account, type your username in full. A profile that does not appear on an exact match is almost certainly restricted at account level.
4. Traffic sources over time
In profile analytics, look at where your views come from. On a healthy account the bulk arrives from "For You". If that source collapsed after a specific date while "Personal profile" and "Following" held steady, that date is when the restriction kicked in — and what you posted the day before is your suspect.
A word on third-party shadowban checkers. None of them have access to platform data: they either repeat the hashtag test you can run yourself in a minute, or they ask for your login and password. The second kind is the fastest way to lose the account entirely.
What triggers reduced reach
Content that is not yours. Clips carrying watermarks from other platforms, re-uploads, movie and TV cuts. This is the most common cause among accounts that "never broke any rule".
Borderline topics. Medical advice, money and investing, weapons, alcohol, revealing clothing, dangerous stunts. This content is not removed, but it is kept out of recommendations.
Links and contacts in the bio or caption. Pushing the audience to other platforms is not something TikTok rewards.
Spam behaviour. Mass follow and unfollow, templated comments at scale, ten clips published within an hour.
A sudden unnatural spike in engagement. More on this below — stated plainly, even though we sell promotion services ourselves.
User reports. A wave of reports triggers an extra review, and distribution slows down while it runs.
How long a shadowban lasts
There are no official timeframes, because officially there is no such thing. What creators consistently observe:
A single clip — the restriction stays with it permanently, but does not transfer to the profile. Your next video starts clean.
An account after one violation — usually a few days up to two weeks, provided nothing new happens.
An account with accumulated warnings — longer, and it lifts only once the offending content is gone.
A useful benchmark: if reach has not recovered in over a month while Account Status is clean, this is not a restriction. Look at your content, your retention, or your posting setup instead.
How to get out: a two-week plan
Find and remove the offending clip. Open Account Status and take down everything flagged there. If the section is empty, delete the video that preceded the drop — the dates in your analytics usually make it obvious.
Appeal if you believe the decision is wrong. The button sits in the same section. Appeals on reused content and borderline topics rarely succeed; appeals on genuine moderation errors often do.
Clean up the profile. Remove links and contacts from the bio, drop hashtag stacks like #fyp #foryou #viral — they carry no information about your topic and keep company with spam.
Pause for three to five days. No posting, no bulk following, no industrial-scale commenting. The pause lets the system build a clean recent history for the profile.
Come back with a single clip. Fully original, no watermarks, on your usual topic, with two or three meaningful hashtags. Not five clips a day — one, and then watch the traffic sources.
Rebuild the pace gradually. One video a day for a week. If the "For You" share starts climbing, the restriction is gone.
What not to do
Deleting and re-uploading the same file. The system recognises videos by digital fingerprint: a rejected clip gets rejected again, and your profile collects another mark.
Starting a fresh account on the same device. The association is not limited to your login. In most cases the new profile inherits the same limits and the old one is lost for nothing.
Paying for "shadowban removal". Nobody outside TikTok has access to its moderation. Everything sold under that name is either the pause you could take yourself, or a straight scam.
Trying to push through with paid engagement. Plainly, even though these are our own services: while a clip is out of recommendations, external views have nowhere to land. Worse, a sharp spike of activity on a restricted account reads to the system as confirmation that something is wrong with the profile. Fix the cause first; only then does amplifying what already works make sense.
When it is not a shadowban after all
If Account Status is clean, your clips show up under their hashtags and your profile is searchable, but the views still are not there — what you are facing is an ordinary algorithmic pass.
The mechanics are simple: the algorithm shows a clip to a small test group and watches whether people stay. An average watch time under 30% means the rollout stops, and no hashtag changes that. You can check the percentage in each video's analytics. What the algorithm actually treats as a signal to expand reach is covered in our piece on getting into TikTok recommendations, and the cross-platform view of the phenomenon is in shadowbans on social media. If your counter reads exactly zero rather than "low", start with why TikTok videos get 0 views instead.
FAQ
How do I check for a TikTok shadowban
Open Settings and privacy → Account Status and check for violations. Then search for your clip by a unique hashtag from another account: if it does not appear, the video is excluded from distribution.
How long does a TikTok shadowban last
There is no official duration. An account-level restriction typically clears within a few days to two weeks if no new violations occur. An individual clip stays restricted permanently, but that does not carry over to the profile.
Is the shadowban real or a myth
TikTok has no such term, but it does document a category of content ineligible for the For You feed. To a creator, that looks and behaves exactly like a shadowban.
Can a shadowban be removed for money
No. No service has access to TikTok moderation. Only removing the offending content, appealing and pausing actually work.
Does buying engagement cause a shadowban
A sharp unnatural spike is one of the signals that slows distribution down. Gradual delivery to an active account rarely causes trouble, while a thousand views in ten minutes on a profile with a hundred followers reads as an anomaly.
Once the restriction is lifted
When reach returns, the first hours after publishing decide a clip's fate again: the algorithm reads the early response and chooses how widely to roll the video out. That is the point where a push is worth it — TikTok views for the initial start and our other TikTok services if profile activity needs support.
The main point stands, though: this is an amplifier, not a cure. It does not lift a restriction — clean content, an appeal and a pause do.
