Engagement on social media: how to measure it and how to raise it
What engagement rate is
Engagement rate (ER) is one of the main measures of an account's performance. It is what advertisers look at, and it is what feeds into the algorithms. Let's work out how to calculate it and how to improve it.
Engagement rate is the percentage of your audience that interacts with your content. Interaction includes likes, comments, saves, shares and other actions.
A high ER shows that your audience is active and interested in your content. A low ER points to «dead» followers or content that misses the mark.
ER formulas
ER by followers (the classic formula)
ER = (Likes + Comments) / Followers × 100%
Example: 500 likes + 50 comments, 10,000 followers
ER = (500 + 50) / 10,000 × 100% = 5.5%
ER by reach (a more accurate formula)
ER = Interactions / Reach × 100%
This formula is more accurate because it counts the real number of people who saw the post.
ER including saves (Instagram)
ER = (Likes + Comments + Saves) / Followers × 100%
Saves are a strong algorithmic signal and are worth counting.
ER benchmarks by platform
- 1–3% — below average
- 3–6% — a good result
- 6–10% — an excellent result
- 10%+ — outstanding (often on smaller accounts)
YouTube
- 1–3% — standard
- 3–5% — good
- 5%+ — excellent
TikTok
- 3–5% — below average
- 5–10% — normal
- 10–20% — good
- 20%+ — viral content
Telegram
Measured through ERR (engagement rate by reach):
ERR = Views / Subscribers × 100%
- 20–40% — normal
- 40–60% — good
- 60%+ — excellent
Why engagement falls
A growing follower count
The bigger the audience, the lower the ER. That is normal. For million-follower accounts, an ER of 1–2% is standard.
Content that is out of date
Audiences change and trends change. What worked a year ago may not work now.
Publishing at the wrong time
If you publish while your audience is asleep, the first few hours will be quiet and the algorithm will lower the post's priority.
Publishing too often — or too rarely
A good rhythm: 1–2 posts a day for Instagram, 1–3 videos a week for YouTube.
How to raise engagement
- Publish at prime time — study your account statistics and work out when your audience is most active
- Ask questions — posts with questions get more comments. «Which one would you pick?», «How about you?», «Do you agree?»
- Use carousels — on Instagram, carousels get on average 30% more engagement than single photos
- Create content worth saving — checklists, round-ups, how-tos — things people want to come back to
- Reply to comments — the author's reply is an extra comment and encourages others to comment too
- Use Stories — Stories appear first in your followers' feed and remind them you exist
- Go live — live content gets algorithmic priority and sends notifications to followers
- Clean up your audience — remove inactive followers from time to time; it raises your ER
How Boost-Like affects ER
